We live in a world that constantly pulls at us via notifications, obligations, deadlines, expectations, and a never-ending list of “things we should be doing.” And if we’re not careful, life becomes a series of responses instead of purposeful decisions. But Scripture calls us to something higher:
“Teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12 (KJV)
Wisdom is not just about knowing what to do, it's about knowing what not to do. It’s about deciding what truly deserves your energy, your attention, your resources, and your heart.
And sometimes wisdom shows up in unexpected places.
One of the greatest pieces of wisdom I ever received wasn’t from a book, a sermon, or a training program. It came from my daughter.
When she graduated high school and entered college, she quietly lived by a filter that many adults don’t learn until much later. She said:
“If it won’t matter in 10 years, I’m not doing it.”
What clarity.
What focus.
What maturity at such a young age.
And I’ll be honest: her words have stayed with me and shaped how I live, lead, make decisions, and coach others today.
The Power of the 10-Year Question
Imagine pausing before every decision and asking:
-
Will this matter in 10 years?
-
Will this bring me closer to God’s purpose for my life?
-
Will this strengthen my family, my faith, or my future?
-
Is this the best use of what God placed in my hands?
When you apply this filter to life, career, business, and relationships, everything becomes clearer.
Suddenly:
-
The argument you’re tempted to start? Not worth 10 minutes, much less 10 years.
-
The business idea you keep ignoring? If it could change your financial future, yes it matters.
-
The job you’re staying in out of fear? If it won’t develop you, stretch you, or support your goals, perhaps it’s time to pivot.
-
The ministry opportunity tugging at your heart? If God is leading you that matters.
This 10-year question forces us to move from reaction to reflection, from busyness to purpose, from distraction to destiny.
God Doesn’t Bless Busy. He Blesses Focus.
Many believers pray for increase, blessing, clarity, or breakthrough but God isn’t obligated to bless what we aren’t committed to stewarding well.
Focus is stewardship.
Intentionality is stewardship.
Saying “no” is stewardship.
Proverbs 4:25–26 says:
“Let your eyes look straight ahead… Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established.”
In other words, focus your eyes, your purpose, and your direction.
A scattered life leads to scattered results. A focused life leads to fruit.
Career & Calling: Invest in What God Is Building In You
Too many people spend their energy on things that drain them instead of build them. Career stress. Office politics. Fear of change. People-pleasing. Overcommitment.
But ask yourself:
Will this matter 10 years from now?
Will this job develop me, or diminish me?
Will staying stuck honor the gifts God placed within me?
Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is make a practical shift:
-
pursue the certification
-
learn the new skill
-
start the business
-
invest in a coach
-
apply for the promotion
-
step into the calling that scares you but aligns with your purpose
Your future self—10 years from now—will thank you.
Business & Purpose: Build What Has Eternal Return
We often forget that our businesses, side hustles, and professional gifts are tools God uses to provide, impact others, and elevate our influence.
When you build your business with vision & values, you’re not just building income, you’re building legacy.
Jesus taught us to be faithful over little so He can trust us with more (Matthew 25:21). That includes finances, opportunities, ideas, and assignments.
A business built on purpose—not pressure—can outlast seasons, storms, and shifting economies. And when you make decisions based on what will matter long-term, you build something that actually supports your life and honors God.
Where Are You Investing Your Energy Today?
Take inventory:
-
What drains you but doesn’t develop you?
-
What steals your focus but doesn’t strengthen your future?
-
What are you giving emotional or mental energy to that won’t matter next month much less in 10 years?
-
What opportunities is God nudging you toward that ARE worth pouring into?
-
What do you need to prune?
-
What do you need to plant?
-
What do you need to water?
The enemy’s greatest weapon isn’t always destruction, it’s distraction.
But the Holy Spirit leads us into purpose, peace, and clarity.
Your life, career, and business deserve intentional stewardship.
Start sowing into what will matter a decade from now and eternity after that.
